Breathing is essential for both brain and body function. Although the brain only accounts for 2% of our body weight, it uses 20% of the oxygen we inhale. Stress and anxiety often lead us to hold our breath, reducing oxygen intake and triggering the "fight or flight" response, which increases heart rate, muscle tension, and stress-related neurotransmitters. In contrast, deep, slow breathing during calm moments enhances oxygen flow and signals safety, promoting relaxation, clearer thinking, and creativity.
